Although my my e-commerce hosting thingie doesn’t make it easy, I was able to do a work around so that customers can pay what they want for products from free to … whatever. I thought that for my my digital downloadables that this would be a good thing.

i was doing my usual sweep for book buying behavior trends and came across this little gem in Statista that during holidays people buy themselves gifts. Ok. Fab. I know I do. The number 1 gift they buy themselves is books. Wait. What? I mean I know I do that, but that’s a general trend? Huh. So that got me thinking about ways to merchandise books during gift giving seasons. You can do little gift baskets of your books to give to yourself. Or you can do a giveaway of one gift basket but sell a bunch of others. The ideas highlighting that your book is the perfect gift to give yourself during this holiday season. 🤷🏻‍♀️ A variation on this theme. At bridal fairs. So maids of honors will be going there with their BFF brides. Why not have gift baskets made up for bridal parties aaaaaand a special gift basket for the maid of honor she can give herself (including alcohol as laws permit🤷🏻‍♀️). I’m just brainstorming here. But the point is that if people give themselves books as gifts, why not make sure your book is one of those books they’re considering. https://www.statista.com/topics/3938/book-formats-in-the-us/

The trends in how much text you should post in your social media content changes. The reasoning that advice givers say ranges from tbt more text you give … then people will have something they will respond to and this will help increase your engagement. Then you’ll read the exact opposite thing. People have short attention spans so write short captions. I’ll let you in on a secret. Trends are generally things that most people are doing. Or are a pattern of behavior that people have noticed. Most times the explanation comes after the pattern has been noticed. It may explain why that pattern exists. it may not. Your niche audience may like it that you are long winded. Or are quick witted with short captions. Some days people may want to read something long. Other days not so much. Put out content. See if it works. Tweak. Your audience is as unique as you are. Be yourself.

You probably have heard of the term SEO which stands for search engine optimization. In simple terms it means that you’re easy to find on the internet. You may have also heard of the term “be out in front of your customers” which means be where your customers are. If your customers are hanging out, for example, in Times Square, you wouldn’t hang out at the Statue of Liberty. One of the things I do every once in a while is look up where my potential clients are hanging out and go there. For the internet, that means making sure I’m hanging out where people are looking, the search terms. On Google, you can look up what search terms are trending. trends.Google.com I looked up self-publishing. I found out that one of the terms associated with that term that’s trending is consultant, so on a few of my web pages in the SEO settings I added “consultant” and “self-publishing“ to the description so that when Google indexes those pages my pages go into the pool for those searches. I’m doing this to make myself more findable. Is this the only thing? No. But it’s part of my overall “I’m over here! Let’s become friends” plan aka SEO plan. Got questions? Drop them below.

What's your favorite image creation tool? I use Adobe creative suite for all of my graphic needs, but most of my indie writing friends use Canva. What do you use?

I've talked to indie writers about this. For some, it's being the center of attention ... they just hate being in the spotlight. For others, it's also coming up with ideas. They feel like they're on a content creation treadmill, when they'd rather be writing? What about you?

This is a quick tip that came up in a consultation I had over the weekend. I’m sure I’ve written about this before but it bears repeating. One of the things that is hard to do is create content for your digital marketing. You have blogs, social media post, etc. maybe you even do videos. So how do you make it all work for you? Cross promoting your content is one way to do it. I’m just amazed on how separate my different audiences are, so promoting my content between platforms not only creates more content but also adds gravitas to your brand. You’re not only promoting the content but also promoting the fact that you’re one all of these platforms (and are you awesome for it). if (fingers crossed) you can get more followers from each of the platforms, that’s an added bonus. It also adds to your online findability. More content with your name on it that has your name on it … you’re more findable. (I did this with a grassroots group I was doing the messaging for. Suddenly we seemed bigger than we really were). Make sure you use your links where you can. So there’s a lot of benefits for cross promoting your content. The other thing is recycling and reusing. So sometimes what I do is combine and edit a series of Instagram posts and turn it into a blog post. Or I quote myself from my blog posts. As I said they’re separate audiences, so they won’t notice the repetition. But I also make sure I tweak it a bit to tailor the content to the audience. So what do you think? Do you have tips on streamlining workflow?

We'd love to get to know you better. Take a moment to say hi to the community in the comments. I'll start. Hi! I'm Michelle Raab of Michelle Raab Marketing. In case you don't know much about me, I thought I'd introduce myself a bit. I'm a mom of a very active 3 almost 4 year old. He's the light of my life. For most of growing up, I thought I was going to be a novelist. Then during college, I realized that I needed a job while I worked on that, so I thought about going into Public Relations (to use my writing skills) and teaching English Lit. While pursuing what I'd need to be in PR, I ended up with a Business Admin minor. Instead of getting the MFA in English Composition, I ended up going into psychology. I ended up with my doctorate in quantitative psychology ... which is good only in as much as I actually understand how The Algorithm works. So yay me. Graduate school took longer than I would've liked, so by the time it was done my personal life had moved on. My husband and I were ready to have kids. Since we were going to adopt, I didn't want to be in mid-semester as an adjunct professor when The Call came (you baby is born, come pick them up), so I decided to wait on trying to find a job. I also decided that I wanted to stay at home while out kid was young. I still wanted to have something for myself, so I returned to my first love which was writing. I could easily put that down to take care of a kid. While deciding if I wanted to go trad or indie, I found out that for both I'd have to do my own marketing anyway... so I thought. I'll do it all myself then. What's the point of going trad if I have to market myself anyway? When I joined the indie community, I had no intention of becoming a marketing consultant. I was just going to use my experience and knowledge for myself, but then I noticed that my fellow writers were really confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed. I started trying to help out ... and then before I knew it, I was a consultant.
